Ghanaian musician Darlington Agyekum also known Dr. Cryme who popularized the ‘twi pop’ genre has shared insights into his music career, highlighting the changes he has observed in the Ghanaian music industry over time.

He discussed how making a hit song has become more challenging, requiring more effort, patience, and investment.

“Growth brings a lot of change.” He reminisced about the olden days of his music career when making music was not as stressful and creating hit songs was effortless.

“We had more time and fewer responsibilities. We could just freestyle and blow up overnight.”

Dr. Cryme made these assertions recently when he sat down with Akua Sika on Ayekooo, a podcast-style video show available on HappyTV’s YouTube channel.

Dr. Cryme mentioned artistes like Opanka and Yaa Pono, who achieved success with ease back in the day. “We didn’t have any burdens or responsibilities, making music was not hard,” he said. “But now, making a hit song requires patience, investment, and a lot of work – from creating music videos to clearing samples.”

As a former hype man, Dr. Cryme notes that the role has evolved. “Today, hype men are known as influencers”.

“To be a successful hype person, you need to be innovative and creative.” He recalled his days as a hype man for songs like “Twipop” and introducing songs for various singers.
