A huge police operation is underway in a suburban street in Sydney‘s south-west after a man was reportedly seen running into a home armed with a gun, plunging a nearby childcare centre into lockdown.

Heavily armed officers swarmed Wollongbar Avenue in Panania on Friday morning and have surrounded a home, where an armed man is believed to be holed up inside.

Wollongbar Avenue and an adjacent street have been blocked off with dozens of police cars and specialist Bear Cat vehicles.

Tactical response officers were seen on rooftops as a police helicopter hovered  above the scene.

A nearby childcare centre has been placed into lockdown.

Residents have been urged to stay away or remain indoors.

‘Officers attached to Bankstown Police, as well as specialist resources, are on scene,’ a police spokeswoman told Daily Mail.

‘The public is urged to avoid the area.

    ‘No further information is available.’

Police sources told the ABC that the alarm was raised after a member of the public reported seeing four people, including an armed man, entering a home.

    More to come.
