The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Bosiako has expressed his dissatisfaction over what he describes as unfair treatment meted out to him by the ruling government.

According to him, the sanctions allegedly imposed on him by the government are excessively severe, which he described as “harsher than those imposed on Russia by the European Union.”

Chairman Wontumi as he is popularly known, speaking on Asempa FM on May 23, 2025, disclosed some of the sanctions he claims have been imposed on him, specifically noting that his bank accounts have been frozen, an action he says has caused him significant challenges.

“If your accounts get frozen how do you expect to survive and even eat? The sanctions President Mahama have imposed on me are more harsher than those European Union imposed on Russia. I don’t have access to any account,” he said.

The politician based in the Ashanti Region added that he will personally honor an invitation extended to him by the police and appear at their Accra premises on Monday, May 26, 2025.

“I will go to the police headquarters because they have brought me a letter. I haven’t received any letter from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB),” he indicated.

Chairman Wontumi’s statement comes on the back of an attempted arrest by security officials at his residence on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Armed security personnel, alleged to be officials from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), reportedly stormed Chairman Wontumi’s residence. Viral videos captured the scene, showing security officials, some in police uniforms and others in plain clothes alighting from white pickup trucks.

Another video showed the supposed security officials knocking and banging at the main entrance gate of Wontumi’s home.

It is not clear why the security officials were at Wontumi’s home, but the government recently suspended the mining licence of his company, Akonta Mining, accusing it of engaging in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

Chairman Wontumi has refuted the accusation, stating that he is being targeted because of his bid to run for the National Chairmanship position of the NPP.
