The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of borrowing nearly GH¢59 billion since assuming office.

According to them, the previous administration left behind a fully operational economy.

Addressing the press on February 27, 2025, after President John Dramani Mahama’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), Stephen Amoah, the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, along with other Minority members, criticized the government’s borrowing spree.

“We handed over a restored economy to the Mahama government—an economy that was operational and fundamentally strong,” Amoah stated.

“All the payments the President [Mahama] is referring to—where did they get the money from? In less than two months, the NDC government has borrowed almost GH¢59 billion, an unprecedented amount. Ghanaians have given them the mandate, but they must be held accountable.”

President Mahama’s State of the Nation Address, delivered in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, outlined his ambitious “Resetting Ghana” agenda, focusing on tackling economic challenges, job creation, and restoring stability.

In his speech, he addressed key policy objectives, provided updates on the state of Ghana’s economy, including the ongoing IMF bailout program, and discussed issues related to security, the cost of living, and other national concerns.

Additionally, he updated Ghanaians on government deliverables for the year ahead, achievements so far, and the challenges that lie ahead.
