President Mahama says the GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund is ready for implementation, setting the stage for a major government-backed effort to rebuild the conflict-affected area and restore economic activity.
President Mahama made the announcement on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when he inaugurated the committee that will oversee the fund.
He said the allocation comes as the security situation in Bawku and surrounding areas continues to improve, providing the stability needed to restart development initiatives that had been disrupted by the conflict.
“The allocation for the Bawku Revitalisation Fund has now been made, and it is GH¢1 billion,” President Mahama said.
He added, “With safety and security prevailing in Bawku and the surrounding areas, this is the time to begin the implementation of the Revitalisation Fund.”
The fund will be used primarily for infrastructure and other interventions the committee considers necessary, with the President stressing that its benefits should extend to as many districts in the Bawku area as possible.
Restoring Bawku’s economic fortunes
President Mahama said the government’s ambition goes beyond physical infrastructure, with the objective of restoring Bawku’s economic relevance.
“We want Bawku to recapture its former glory as a major commercial centre in Ghana,” he said.
The President said the conflict had disrupted the delivery of essential public services, including the deployment of National Service personnel and medical workers to the area.
He also pointed to the Tamli Dam project as an example of development that had been derailed by the insecurity.
With security improving, President Mahama said government now has the opportunity to return to Bawku and continue projects that have been left unfinished.
“I am happy that now we have the opportunity to go back and continue the development to enable the people of the area benefit from all the projects that we have been undertaking, and that Bawku gets its fair share of the national cake,” he said.
From peace to development
President Mahama said the government’s decision to activate the revitalisation fund follows the progress made since the Otumfuo Mediation Committee presented its report on December 16, 2025.
He recalled that he had used that occasion to call for the guns to be silenced and for the Bawku dispute to be resolved through lawful processes.
He said the security services have remained firm in the area since then, contributing to the relative calm being experienced.
“I am happy to receive the reports that we no longer hear gunshots at night and that impunity has abated,” he said.
The President expressed confidence in the newly inaugurated committee and said its members have the experience and integrity required to steer the fund effectively.
He subsequently declared the Bawku Revitalisation Committee duly inaugurated.
Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson serves as Chairman, with members including MP for Bawku Central and Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, Chief of Tempane, HRM Cletus Abugri and the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga.
