Ghanaian reggae musician and radio presenter, Blakk Rasta, has applauded President John Dramani Mahama for cancelling the rotational Independence Day celebration in the country.

Speaking on 3FM on February 13, 2025, Blakk Rasta noted that he has been impressed with the work of President Mahama ever since he assumed office on January 7, 2025.

“President Mahama is doing unprecedented things in this country. I am very impressed with what this gentleman is doing so far… He has stopped all his ministers from flying first and business class. Everybody will fly economy, which would save the nation a lot of money.

“The president has come to tell us that the Independence Day celebration costs us a lot of money every time we move outside to rotate the celebration in the various regional capitals. Do you know how many boreholes and classrooms the money we spent on various celebrations could have constructed? I applaud the president,” he said.

Blakk Rasta also questioned the importance of the Independence Day celebration.

He noted that the majority of Ghanaians are more interested in the holiday celebration rather than the essence of the birthday.

“What is the importance of celebrating independence every year when the people are not learning anything from their independence? How many people understand why independence is even celebrated? Ghanaians are more interested in the holiday than the essence of the birthday of Ghana.

“When it’s 6th March, everybody is looking forward to where they can sleep at home, travel around, or go to the beach and just rest. It is not a day to reflect on the priorities, history, and legacy of this country,” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama, through the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed that as part of efforts to cut down on expenses, the 68th Independence Day Celebration, themed “Reflect, Review, and Reset,” would be moved from Independence Square to the Presidency in Accra.

He noted that figures on the cost of holding rotational Independence Day celebrations showed that, depending on the location, the financial implications were significant.
