Ghanaian rapper M.anifest has talked about the challenges facing the country’s creative arts sector, describing it as broken and lacking proper infrastructure.

He shared his perspective at the “Protecting What You Create” seminar. Reflecting on his personal experience, M.anifest revealed that even after more than ten years in the music industry, he has never received royalties from Ghana.

He explained that as a Ghanaian creative or businessperson, one must navigate a system that is often broken or entirely absent.

While he acknowledged that some progress had been made over the years, he admitted he had not earned a single cedi in royalties. He emphasized that artists are essentially starting from a broken foundation.

M.anifest also encouraged creatives to adapt to the challenges by embracing technology. He stressed that digital tools are now essential for leveling the playing field, particularly in a system with limited opportunities and venues.

He highlighted the scarcity of performance spaces in Ghana and questioned how artists can tour the country effectively.

Despite pointing out the gaps and sometimes non-existent infrastructure, he clarified that his message was not meant to be pessimistic or discouraging. Instead, he said it serves as a reminder that building a career in the arts requires persistence and effort.

M.anifest further urged creatives to recognize that the uphill climb is part of the journey, and that leveraging technology can help them navigate and overcome the limitations of the system.
