The 8th edition of the Luv FM Kel-Charcoal High School Debate has officially commenced, with the first preliminary round held at the Christian Service University in Kumasi on Monday, August 10, 2026.

The opening contest featured Kumasi Wesley Girls’ SHS against Mancell Girls’ SHS, debating the motion: “Ghana Education Service Should Reintroduce Corporal Punishment.”

Kumasi Wesley Girls’ SHS argued in favor of the motion, while Mancell Girls’ SHS opposed it in what turned out to be a closely contested battle of arguments, rebuttals, and counterarguments.

The principal speaker for Kumasi Wesley Girls’ SHS argued that the absence of corporal punishment has contributed to increasing indiscipline in some senior high schools.

She cited instances of student unrest and violence to support the school’s position.

Mancell Girls’ SHS, however, mounted a strong opposition, challenging the arguments presented by their opponents and making a case against the reintroduction of corporal punishment in Ghana’s educational system.

At the end of the contest, Kumasi Wesley Girls’ SHS emerged victorious with 200 points, narrowly defeating Mancell Girls’ SHS, who scored 194 points.

The second contest of the day saw Otumfuo Osei Tutu II College face Christ the King SHS (CHRISSEC) on the motion: “Equality before the Law Is a Mirage in Ghana.”

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II College argued in favor of the motion, while Christ the King SHS opposed it.

The contest produced another engaging display of logical reasoning, confidence and persuasive speaking, with both schools putting forward strong arguments in their bid to progress to the next stage of the competition.

However, Christ the King SHS emerged the clear winners with 214 points, beating Otumfuo Osei Tutu II College, which recorded 173 points.

The result brings the campaign of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II College in this year’s competition to an end, while Christ the King SHS advances to the next phase.

The two contests marked the opening day of the 8th edition of the Luv FM Kel-Charcoal High School Debate, with participating schools expected to continue battling for a place in the subsequent rounds.

The competition continues to provide a platform for students to demonstrate their public
speaking, critical thinking, research and debating skills.

Tomorrow’s contests are also expected to be exciting and fiercely competitive, with Mankranso SHS taking on Ibadur Rahman SHS in the first debate of the day.

The second contest will feature a highly anticipated clash between inaugural champions T.I. Amass and Okomfo Anokye SHS, as the schools battle for a place in the next stage of the competition.
