She has always been proud of her roots, speaking fondly of the city where she grew up and its people throughout her career.

Now the compliment has been returned as Scots singer Lulu was honoured by her hometown Glasgow with a plaque erected at the site of The Lindella Club, on Union Street, where she was discovered singing at the age of 14.

The plaque is part of a new heritage trail celebrating Glasgow’s musical history.

The project will place ten of the plaques at venues of musical significance across the city. Other acts to be championed include Lewis Capaldi, Simple Minds, Belle and Sebastian, Texas and Wet Wet Wet.

It is no wonder that Lulu is among those to be recognised. The singer racked up ten top 10 singles, including her breakout hit Shout, as well as a Eurovision victory, an OBE and a CBE in her decades-long career.

Titled the Nordoff and Robbins Music Heritage Trail, it has been launched by the consortium behind a proposed Scottish Rock ’n’ Roll Hall Of Fame.

Other locations earmarked for plaques include Renfrew Street, where Simple Minds played their first gig at Satellite City, and Osborne Street, where Wet Wet Wet recorded their smash hit Love Is All Around.

Bentinck Street, where Belle and Sebastian’s first album was recorded, will also be included, as will Bain Street, where Lewis Capaldi played his first headline gig at venue Saint Luke’s.

The latest accolade for Lulu comes just months after the singer made the bombshell revelation that she had a short-lived affair with another musical figure – David Bowie.

Following her divorce from former husband and Bee Gees star Maurice Gibb in 1973, Lulu embarked on a relationship with celebrity hairstylist John Frieda.

However, the romance was tested by her affair with Bowie, then at the peak of his powers as one of the defining artists of the 1970s.

‘I had a brief relationship with him, we had a fling,’ she said of Bowie, admitting Frieda ‘knew, and it was an issue’.
