Jota (L) and Diaz (R) were teammates

Liverpool winger, Luis Díaz, has come under fire from fans after photos emerged showing him at a private party with social media influencers, while the majority of his Liverpool teammates attended the wake of the late Diogo Jota.

Jota and his brother André Silva tragically died in a car crash in northwestern Spain on July 3, 2025, just 11 days after the forward’s wedding, and weeks before pre-season was due to start.

A wake was held in Gondomar, Portugal, on Friday, July 4, 2025, followed by their funeral at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar the next day – July 5.

Fans on X and Liverpool forums voiced anger toward Díaz, accusing him of hypocrisy and insensitivity.

Many noted how Jota had previously shown solidarity with Díaz, standing alongside him when Díaz’s father was kidnapped, yet Díaz was absent when Jota needed him most.

On the other hand, numerous Liverpool players joined family and club staff in Portugal. Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Virgil van Dijk attended the wake and funeral, with emotional tributes at Anfield and moments of silence held ahead of the Women’s Euro 2025 fixtures.

Liverpool also postponed its pre-season training, and club officials readied flights for players and staff to attend ceremonies in Portugal.

Supporters are calling on the club to address Díaz’s absence. Several fans demanded a public explanation, with some calling for an apology.

Díaz has not commented publicly. Liverpool has also kept its communications focused on backing Jota’s family and has yet to respond to Díaz’s situation.
