Liberals bloodbath begins with Sussan Ley on the brink of losing leadership spill

Jane Hume says Sussan Ley is a good person – but it’s time for her to go.

‘I’ll be supporting Angus Taylor’s candidacy and I’ll also be putting my own hand up for the role of deputy leader,’ Hume told Sunrise host Nat Barr.

‘We are sitting at a crossroads and we can’t sit idly by while we see our support erode.

‘This government is not doing a good job, its support isn’t increasing. People are feeling rightly aggrieved, but they’re not seeing an alternative from a Liberal opposition.

She described Ley as a ‘good person’ who has worked “incredibly hard in service of her party and her country’.

‘But when my colleagues and I go back to our electorates, people are telling us that they need something more.

She put Labor fear Taylor as a potential leader.

But Barr said Taylor did not prove himself while shadow treasurer prior to the 2025 election.

‘Can you honestly say that Angus Taylor socked it to the government on energy or the cost of living?’ Barr asked.

Hume hit back and described him as ‘one of the greatest intellects’.

‘The most important thing now is that we let him have an opportunity to develop the policies that he knows he wants to deliver for the Australian people,’ she said.

‘He has an incredible background and amazing academic history.

‘He’s a good man, a great liberal and he deserves an opportunity to lead.’

Ley has walked into the party‑room meeting flanked by her key supporters, including NSW moderate Senators Andrew Bragg and Maria Kovacic.

Shadow Attorney‑General Andrew Wallace, one of Ley’s most vocal backers, followed closely behind, along with Deputy Senate Leader Anne Ruston, Tim Wilson, and Melissa Price.

The mood inside Ley’s office is understood to be ‘dire,’ with staff privately conceding she is likely to lose the leadership within the hour.

One senior member of Ley’s team had reportedly clung to hopes last night that the contest was still a ‘coin‑flip.’

That optimism has since collapsed, with staff now joking grimly about ‘getting the shredder ready’ for documents.

Angus Taylor is poised to win the looming leadership showdown with Opposition Leader Sussan Ley as the decisive Liberal party-room meeting approaches.

Momentum swung sharply against Ley on Thursday after a wave of high-profile resignations from her shadow frontbench.

Senior figures, including James Paterson, Jonno Duniam, Matt O’Sullivan, Claire Chandler, Phil Thompson and Michaelia Cash stepped down, with several openly declaring they no longer had confidence in Ley’s leadership.

Paterson said the party must ‘change or die’, adding he could no longer support Ley to lead the opposition forward.

The Daily Mail understands Taylor has already secured at least 28 of the 51 votes required to seize the leadership.

Ley is still expected to contest the ballot if a spill motion succeeds, but current numbers suggest she faces an uphill battle to retain the leadership.

The showdown for deputy appears to be between Dan Tehan and Jane Hume, with Ted O’Brien dead in the water.

But it is all dependent on what happens with the spill motion as well as the subsequent vote on the leadership.

For example, does Sussan Ley run in both, or does Tim Wilson run in her place. If the spill motion fails there won’t even be a vote on the leadership, much less the deputy role.

If it succeeds, however, as expected, then O’Brien will certainly be challenged, and may not even choose to run himself.

Because any showdown for deputy follows the leadership vote, it’s even possible a candidate for leader who is defeated, such as Wilson, thereafter runs for deputy.

If somehow Ley found a way to survive this vote it is hard to know what happens next for the Liberal Party.

All the frontbenchers who resigned yesterday wouldn’t be able to return to shadow ministerial roles under Ley.

They might be able to do so under Tim Wilson, but even that wouldn’t be easy.

Such a dramatic change of events could see conservatives defect to One Nation, with the Liberals dramatically realigning to the moderate end of the political spectrum.

• The coalition suffers its worst defeat at the May federal election, winning just 43 seats in the House of Representatives.
• Sussan Ley defeats Angus Taylor in a leadership ballot shortly after the election loss, 29 votes to 25. Ms Ley becomes the party’s first female leader. Taylor is named as opposition defence spokesman in her shadow cabinet.
• Ley faces split of the coalition after the Nationals walk away from the political partnership over divisions on nuclear energy and regional investment funds. The two parties reunite after a week.
• The opposition leader faces pressure after the front bench resignation of West Australian MP Andrew Hastie and later Jacinta Nampijinpa Price.
• The Liberals abandon their net-zero by 2050 target following pressure from conservative Liberal members on Ley, with a series of party room meetings held to thrash out a position.
• The coalition comes under pressure from One Nation in the polls, with former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce later defecting to the minor party.
• The coalition suffers a second split after three Nationals senators vote against the party position on hate speech laws brought forward in a special sitting of parliament after the Bondi terror attack.
• In January, Taylor and Hastie hold a secret meeting in Melbourne hours before a memorial service for former Liberal MP Katie Allen.
• The following day, Hastie announces he will not contest the leadership despite speculation he would challenge.
• After more than two weeks apart, the coalition agree to reunite in February, with the Nationals rebels to spend six weeks in the sin bin before returning to shadow cabinet.
• A Newspoll shows One Nation outpolling the opposition, with the coalition falling to a record low 18 per cent primary vote, with Ley having a minus 39 net approval rating.
• Taylor resigns from Ley’s cabinet, saying the party needs a new direction, but does not immediately challenge for the leadership or call a spill.
• Several frontbenchers follow suit the next day, with a spill formally requested.
• A party room meeting is called to decide the leadership.

How the spill will work:

• Following Taylor’s resignation from the front bench, Liberals Phillip Thompson and Jess Collins requested a leadership spill take place, with a special party room meeting locked in.
• At the meeting, candidates for the leadership are asked to put their name forward, and will give a short speech outlining reasons for support
• A vote will then take place of all 51 members of the Liberal Party in federal parliament, with the winner being named party leader and opposition leader
• If there are more than two candidates, a first round will be held with all contenders, with the person with the lowest number of votes eliminated. Successive votes are held until there is a final two
• A separate ballot will be held for a deputy leader with the same process as the vote for the leader.

Sussan Ley’s supporters continue to hope that the spill vote will be close, but even they admit that she’s behind by at least three votes.

Although there are some late murmurs that Angus Taylor and his supporters might get the shock of his life today.

Taylor’s team are hopeful that the spill motion can success by as many as 8 or 9 votes.

Either way, once a majority of Liberals vote for a spill it is a sure sign that Ley will lose any subsequent vote for who should lead, and she may therefore not even contest that vote.

If she does, they is a clear sign that major divisions persist within the parliamentary team, as does personal animosity by Ley towards Taylor.

There have been some suggestions that once Ley loses the spill motion if it is a tight defeat, another moderate such as Tim Wilson will run against Taylor.

Daily Mail has confirmed that if Ley doesn’t stand up to force a challenge after the spill motion succeeds Tim Wilson will definitely do so, forcing Taylor into a leadership vote in front of his colleagues.

It’s unlikely Wilson will win, although his supporters are bullish, but either way doing so would illustrate just how angry moderates are with what Taylor and his supporters have done.
