President John Dramani Mahama is Ghana's president President John Dramani Mahama is Ghana’s president

President John Dramani Mahama has urged his party sympathisers to uphold discipline, integrity, and respect for law and order following the victory of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The president emphasised the need for the NDC to distinguish itself from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by refraining from actions that undermine public confidence, pointing out the need to take advantage of the victory to address the concerns of citizens.

“Let us show Ghana that we are different. Let us show Ghana that we are different. I know that a lot of our youth sacrificed and went to great lengths to make the party win. But I know that our regional and constituency executives know who helped to achieve this victory. And what you must be doing is compiling a list of such people and what possibilities there are so that we can engage their youthful energies when things have settled.

“And so, rather than take a law in our own hands, open fertilizer depots and fertilizer, open warehouses and take rice and things, let us show NPP that we are different and let us win the confidence that Ghanaians reposed in us,” Mahama said this in a video shared on X by GHOne TV on January 10, 2025.

The president also expressed concern over reports of undisciplined behaviours by some party supporters, including attempts to seize government properties. He called for restraint, citing mistakes made by the NPP after their 2016 victory.

He said, “I know that in 2017, that is what the NPP did. After we lost that election, as soon as we handed over, they started to attack government offices, take over tolling booths, you know, take over public toilets, attack, go to government offices and throw people out, seize, stop people on the street and take cars from them. We must not do the same thing.”

President John Mahama further pointed out reasons behind the NPP’s defeat, attributing it to arrogance, incompetence, and failure to address the concerns of citizens.

“Ghanaians punished the NPP for arrogance, for incompetence, and just for not listening to what their cries and challenges were. And so, as I said in the campaign, there’s no use fighting for political power if we’re coming to repeat the same mistakes that the NPP did. And so, that’s why I’m a bit concerned about some of the things that are happening,” he added.

The president, therefore, called on constituency and regional chairmen to guide the party’s youth and ensure that sensitive installations are protected.

He warned that if law and order continues to deteriorate, security services may need to intervene, a situation he hopes to avoid.

“And so, I will expect that regional chairman and constituency chairman will call our young people to order so that we can do this thing in an organized fashion. If this continues, we cannot let law and order break down. And so, we’d have to call the security services to come and protect those sensitive installations. And we wouldn’t want that to happen. And so, let us, on our own, bring things into order so that Ghanaians can repost their confidence in us,” he concluded.
