Charles Taylor, former Hearts of Oak striker
Accolades and legendary status may represent the pinnacle of achievement for many footballers, but for former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko striker Charles Taylor, they hold little significance in the context of the Ghana Premier League (GPL).
In a candid and critical assessment, the seasoned player expressed deep concern over the poor standards of the GPL, emphasizing that legendary status is merely a hollow honor when the league itself struggles to thrive.
During an interview on Angel TV, Taylor was asked if he would leverage his legendary status to help revive his former club, Hearts of Oak. In response, the veteran striker offered an unfiltered view on the concept of legendary status within the league.
“I don’t place much value on legendary status in the Ghana Premier League. Legendary status is about your personal life, and I’m focused on living mine. If you depend on this so-called legendary status, you’ll end up starving. I’d rather hustle than rely on it; otherwise, I’d be sitting at home, crying,” he stated.
Taylor enjoyed an illustrious career in the GPL, playing for its two biggest clubs, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak. He notably won the 2000 CAF Champions League with the Phobians and claimed the GPL title four times during his time with the club.
