Former Ghanaian footballer, Laryea Kingston has disclosed that his wife didn’t support his decision to become a coach after retirement.

According to Laryea Kingston, his wife opposed the idea when he began his coaching journey.

The Uganda U17 national team head coach explained that the demanding nature of coaching, often keeping coaches away from their families, initially discouraged her. However, he later had a change of heart.

“When I was a player, I wasn’t even thinking that I would be a coach today because I wanted to do something else. I knew it wasn’t easy, always being away from the family and all that.”

“My wife wasn’t in support of me going into coaching. But for me, I believe there is something I have to do with the game, and it’s not complete. I have to complete it, you know,” he told Sporty FM.

The former Black Starlets head coach further revealed that he felt a divine calling to go into coaching.

“I took my time to educate myself. I know a lot of coaches because my friends are coaching. I wanted to coach, but at first, I wasn’t sure. Then there was a calling, ‘Go and do it, because this is where your strength is.’ People were also encouraging me to take it up,” he added.

Laryea Kingston, currently in charge of the Uganda U17 national team, has successfully qualified his side for the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
