A van registered to the Labour Party was driven illegally for three months without a valid MoT certificate.

Its MoT ran out in August, but it wasn’t until last week that it was successfully given a roadworthy certificate by a garage.

Drivers who fail to have an up-to-date MoT while on a public road can face a fine up of to £1,000.

The red Peugeot van is registered to the Erewash Labour constituency in Derbyshire whose MP is Adam Thompson was elected to Parliament for the first time in July.

The vehicle was spotted out and about in the constituency several days ago and a photo posted on the Spotted: Long Eaton Facebook page on November 6.

The same day the van was put through its MoT and issued with an updated certificate.

Several people commenting on the photo, that appeared with the words: ‘Our new Labour MP seems to have forgotten something important’, were less than impressed with the diesel van being driven for so long without a valid test certificate.

One commented: ‘C’mon law and rules are for the plebs – not the London luvvie Labour lawyer party….free pass every time.’

Another wrote: ‘Hope they seized it.’

The van should have undertaken a MoT test after its current certification expired on August 5.

It was seen on the roads last week in the constituency.

A check on a government website open to members of the public reveals a new certificate was issued on November 6 – meaning it was on the road illegally for three months.

Car and van owners can sign up to an email alert one month before the certificate expires warning them that the vehicle needs testing.

All vehicles over three years old must undergo a MoT test each year with mechanics checking it is roadworthy.

The test involves a check of brakes, seatbelts, steering, suspension, tyres, wheels, head and brake lights.

All cars undergo the same test which usually takes up to an hour.

A spokesman for the East Midlands Labour Party said the car was not registered to the MP and he was not driving the vehicle when the photo was taken.

It also said the vehicle has since passed a MoT.

The van was first registered in 2023 would have been used by party workers during the election campaign.

The constituency MP Adam Thompson took the seat from the Conservatives in the July election.
