Kweku Smoke’s concert is proof that rap is not dead

Following rapper Kweku Smoke’s successful concert in Accra, entertainment pundit DJ Slim has addressed the misconception that rap is no longer relevant.

It could be recalled that earlier in 2024, rappers were transitioning to singing and releasing hit songs.

The success of these songs led many to believe that singing was more lucrative than rap, and hence, the rap genre was dead.

However, DJ Slim, in a submission on his YouTube channel, argued that the success of Kweku Smoke’s concert on December 20, 2024, showed that the genre still remains strong.

“When the conversations started, I was like, ‘What is going on? Hard rappers were suddenly singing.

“But now that we have seen what Kweku Smoke has done, such conversation should come to an end,” he said.

DJ Slim emphasized that he is not against rappers experimenting with other genres but highlighted Kweku Smoke’s rise to the top solely through rap as a success story.

“Many artistes think that every song they drop should blow. That is a wrong perception. Kweku Smoke had songs that were not hits, but they added to his catalogue.

“I am not against rappers experimenting with other genres, but this is a success story of a young guy who rose to the top solely with rap,” he added.

He urged artistes to find ways to commercialize rap instead of declaring it dead.

“The conversation should end today. If you, as an artiste have not found a way to commercialize rap, tell us. Find a way to sell it, and the money will come.

“That is the same way singers did. If you tried rap and it didn’t work and singing worked for you. Fine. But don’t start saying rap is dead,” he said.
