Sudan national team coach Kwesi Appiah has opened up about his recent meeting with the country’s President, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, on Sunday, January 5, 2025.

The Sudanese civil war has plagued the country since 2023, bringing the Sudan Premier League, the country’s top-flight football league, to a grinding halt and prompting the national team to temporarily relocate their training base to Saudi Arabia.

Despite these challenges, Appiah’s meeting with the President was positive. According to the former Black Stars coach, the Sudanese League could resume on Friday, January 10, 2025. In an interview with Ghanasportspage, the 64-year-old disclosed how President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan lauded the team’s efforts in securing qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“The President appreciated our qualification and urged us to keep fighting in every competition. He assured us of his full support for the team,” Appiah said.

Under Appiah’s guidance, Sudan defied all odds to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, despite the challenges posed by the war. The Falcons of Jediane finished second in their group, which included Angola, Ghana, and Niger, with a record of two wins, two draws, and two losses.
