The opening day of the final funeral rites for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, at the Manhyia Palace on Monday, September 15, 2025, took a dramatic turn when renowned traditional priest Kwaku Bonsam arrived spectacularly.

Mounted on horseback and flanked by a retinue of aides, Kwaku Bonsam rode into the palace forecourt in full traditional regalia.

His appearance, complete with a horned crown-helmet, a staff of authority, and the Ashanti flag held aloft, drew gasps and applause from onlookers who marveled at the powerful display of Ashanti tradition and culture.

The ongoing Dɔte Yie ceremony has attracted thousands of mourners from across Asanteman and beyond who have converged at the palace to pay their last respects to the revered queen mother.

Earlier in the day, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, led chiefs and elders of Asanteman in filing past the remains of his late mother.

The solemn procession was accompanied by vibrant drumming, dancing, and cultural displays that reflected the grandeur of the Ashanti Kingdom’s royal traditions.

Members of the public have also been allowed to view the Queen Mother, who currently lies in state within the palace grounds, as the nation bids farewell to one of its most celebrated royal matriarchs.
