Former Black Stars Management Committee member Kudjoe Fianoo has urged the Ghana Football Association to appoint technical director Winfried Schäfer as interim head coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The GFA is currently searching for a new coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo after disappointing results during the March international window. Ghana suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna before losing 2-1 to Germany in Stuttgart.
Speaking to Kessben Sports, Fianoo stressed that Schäfer’s familiarity with Ghanaian football makes him a suitable short-term option while the association conducts a thorough search for a permanent coach.
He warned that time constraints could affect preparations, urging the GFA to avoid rushed decisions and instead focus on securing a long-term solution.
Several experienced coaches, including Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento and Fernando Santos, have been linked with the vacant role.
The GFA is expected to appoint a new coach next week ahead of upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Wales.
Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England and Croatia in Group L.
