The former Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, Kobina Tahiru Hammond, has announced plans to appeal the GH¢60,000 cost imposed on him by the Obuasi High Court after dismissing his election petition against the sitting MP, Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Hammond described the court-imposed cost as unfair.

“I’m not too upset with the judge. There was some mix-up; the lawyers did not attend, as I am told. You can understand. We filed a petition; a few things went wrong. I am appealing as the appellant in person. The cost of GH¢60,000 is unfair,” he stated.

Hammond attributed the outcome of the election to the decision by some New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters not to vote.

“The NDC won the Asokwa election by default. For whatever reason, we, the NPP, decided to hand over power on a silver platter. He (Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani) didn’t win. I am appealing,” he remarked.

He also explained why his petition was dismissed by the court.

“The lawyer talked about me not filing the suit myself, but it was filed in my name. He made a scandalous suggestion that I ask someone [a lawyer] whose name was not even registered on the bar list. I don’t even understand. This is a person who was my classmate; we left university and law school the same year. He has been in practice for close to 35 to 40 years,” Hammond stated.

The former lawmaker had filed a petition contesting the results of the December 7, 2024 parliamentary election, in which he lost by 954 votes.

However, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the court, presided over by Justice Kwabena Twumasi, dismissed the case for want of prosecution after Hammond and his lawyers failed to appear on three consecutive occasions.

The court further described the petition as a waste of its time and awarded a cost of GH¢60,000 against him in favor of the sitting MP, Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani.
