Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has defended the dismissal of former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, insisting he was not required to consult President John Mahama before taking action.

Addo, 50, was sacked in March following back-to-back friendly defeats against Austria and Germany, despite guiding Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Adams maintained that the decision fell within his mandate as sector minister. He stressed that the President entrusted his office with the authority to make key decisions, including changes to the national team’s technical leadership.

In the aftermath, the Ghana Football Association moved swiftly to appoint Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz on a short-term four-month contract.

Queiroz, who has previously managed Iran, Egypt and Colombia, is currently in Europe assessing Ghanaian players ahead of the World Cup. He is expected to begin hands-on preparations next month, starting with a friendly against Mexico, before a final warm-up game against Wales on June 2.

Ghana will make their fifth World Cup appearance in 2026, facing England, Croatia and Panama in Group L.
