A student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi has died after diving from a 17.6-foot-high platform into a swimming pool on campus.
The deceased, identified as David Osei Oppong, was said to have gone swimming with some friends when he attempted a dive from the highest platform at the university’s swimming pool.
In a short video circulating on social media, the Level 300 chemical engineering student is seen jumping from the platform and plunging into the water.
However, a few seconds after entering the pool, David reportedly failed to resurface, prompting an emergency rescue effort by other swimmers and bystanders.
Pool attendants at the facility immediately rushed to his aid and pulled him out of the water.
Despite attempts to revive him through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), he could not be saved.
He was rushed to the university hospital for emergency medical care but couldn’t be saved.
The incident reportedly occurred around 5 pm on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

In a statement, the university mourned the loss of the student and said police have begun investigations into the circumstances leading to the student’s death.
According to the university, Mr Agyapong was an experienced swimmer, a regular user of the swimming facility and a member of the university’s basketball team.
His body has since been deposited at the morgue of the School of Medical Sciences at the University for autopsy.
A video showing David Osei jumping from the 17.6ft platform before drowning to death. I believe he was influenced by his peers. RIP TO HIM https://t.co/jYVIOIr0H2
