The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has failed to elect a Presiding Member to chair the Assembly for the next two years, after two rounds of voting.

Patrick Kwame Frimpong, the incumbent, secured 35 votes in the first round and 36 votes in the second round, while his sole contender, Ernest Baffour Ofori, obtained 24 and 23 votes respectively.

In line with Section 27 of the Local Governance Act (Act 936), a Presiding Member must be elected by at least two-thirds of Assembly members.

With the KMA comprising 66 members, a candidate requires a minimum of 44 votes to be declared successful.

Earlier, Isham Alhassan and Kwame Agyemang withdrew their nominations for the position.

A fresh meeting is expected to be convened within the next 10 days to conduct another election, as stipulated under Act 936.
