Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has shed light on his decision to remain silent during the peak of the campaign season for the 2024 election.
In a video clip of a recent interview shared on social media, the former Assin Central legislator said that comments he had previously made were used against him after he declared his intention to contest the party’s flagbearership.
Ken Agyapong said he came under heavy criticism within the party after he declared his intention to contest for the presidential slot.
According to him, some remarks he had made in the past, which were previously welcomed by the party and targeted at the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were suddenly used as tools to discredit him.
“When I was criticising the NDC, my party was happy. But when I decided to contest, all those things were used against me as if I had committed a sin,” he said.
He said videos of him criticising the NDC were deliberately circulated and misinterpreted.
“They show some videos of Kennedy Agyapong; he said this, he said that, just to paint me as not being presidential material. But if they are not being diabolical and you listen carefully, I was advising them and criticising some bad deeds of the party people.”
Kennedy Agyapong disclosed that he had extended an apology to President John Dramani Mahama for some of the harsh comments he made in the past.
According to him, despite their political differences, the President and his wife showed him nothing but respect and kindness.
“That’s why I apologised to President Mahama, because he’s been very nice to me. He loves me. His wife too. But because of the party, I ignored this relationship and criticised him. I have to be honest, I was harsh,” he admitted.
He further justified his silence using a biblical reference, saying, “My argument is, in the Bible, they have Ten Commandments. Since Abraham’s time, they’ve not added one to make it eleven. So the ten sins of Kennedy Agyapong — I won’t go and say anything again for you to add one to make it eleven or twelve. That’s why I’m quiet.”
