Music producer David Kojo Kyei, widely known as Kaywa, has revealed details about the final project Ghanaian highlife legend Daddy Lumba was working on before his death.

Kaywa disclosed in an interview on Starr FM that Lumba was crafting what he envisioned as a timeless album, one that would mark his official retirement and stand apart from anything he had previously done.

“A month ago, he called me and said he wanted to do a timeless project, and that was going to be his last project before he retires. That’s because he has given Ghana back-to-back hits, so this time he wants to do something he can give to his kids,” Kaywa recalled.

To support the ailing icon, Kaywa made arrangements to take the studio to Lumba. Instead of bringing him into a recording facility, Kaywa met him at his home, where the legendary artiste had his own setup.

“When he told me that, I said he doesn’t have to come all the way to the studio, I would make myself available at his house. He had a recording studio in his house, too, so I just had to show up, and we started the recording,” he said.

Kaywa revealed that the project was far from typical Lumba fare. The veteran singer stepped outside his highlife comfort zone to explore genres he had never fully embraced before, including Root Reggae, Amapiano, and Afrobeats.

“We did about 27 songs, and they were not like the regular Lumba kind of songs. He wanted to leave his comfort zone. We had Lumba doing Root Reggae, Amapiano, Afrobeats and his regular Highlife,” Kaywa explained.
