Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Justice Blay has made explosive claims about a hidden drinking and smoking culture within the team.

He lifted the curtain from the off-field drama that, he says, overshadowed his career at the club.

Speaking candidly on Pure FM, Blay did not hold back as he addressed long-standing rumours about his lifestyle.

For years, the midfielder had carried the reputation of being a heavy drinker, an image he says has been unfairly pinned on him alone.

“People have been misinformed that I’m the only drunkard in the club, but that’s not true,” Blay stated bluntly.

According to him, the culture ran deeper than many fans realise. He named teammates Joseph Ablor and Camara Mohammed, the Guinea import, claiming they too regularly smoked ‘Shisha’ during their time at Kotoko.

It was a bombshell admission for a club that prides itself on discipline and tradition, and Blay didn’t stop there.

He further revealed that he sensed his time was up even before club bosses told him officially.

During Kotoko’s camp ahead of their MTN FA Cup clash with Golden Kick FC, Blay overheard a private conversation between club official Nana Apinkra and coach Kwesi Appiah, which he says confirmed his worst fears that he was no longer wanted.

“I knew I was not going to be part of Kotoko’s team. I sensed it, and later they called me in and told me I am not in the plans of the club. They said they are not only looking at performance,” he said.

By the end of the 2024/25 season, Blay and Kotoko agreed to part ways, terminating his contract a year before it was due to expire.

He helped the club secure a top four finish and the FA Cup trophy during his final season.
