Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has declared his administration’s commitment to revitalizing sports in Ghana.

Over the past few years, the country’s sports sector has significantly declined.

The Ghana Premier League, junior and senior national teams, and the women’s national teams have all suffered setbacks during this period.

During one of his campaign tours, Mahama attributed the decline to the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

However, he assured Ghanaians that if elected in the December 7 general elections, his government would take steps to address and rectify the ongoing challenges in the sports sector.

“The elephant has come and destroyed everything in this country. Today, even the Black Stars cannot score goals. For the last 20 years, the Black Stars always qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup.

“Under Akufo-Addo and Bawumia, the Black Stars cannot even score goals. The NDC is going to come and reorganize our sports so that we can lift the Black Stars again and restore them to their former glory,” he said.

The Black Stars of Ghana, after back-to-back group stage exits at the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, failed to win any of their six 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, drawing three and losing three.

As a result, they missed out on an AFCON tournament for the first time in two decades.
