Ghanaian striker, Jerry Afriyie

Ghanaian attacker Jerry Afriyie will be leaving the Black Satellites camp in the ongoing Under-20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament after playing two matches.

This comes after the youngster’s club, Deportivo Lugo, announced prior to the tournament that he would have to return after playing the first two games in the group stage against Senegal and DR Congo.

“Club Deportivo Lugo announces that its player Jerry Afriyie has been called up to the Ghana U-20 national team for the matches corresponding to the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations being held these days in Egypt.

“After expressing his desire to be part of his country’s squad, the Club has authorized the Albivermello forward to travel to Egypt to join his national team’s training camp. Jerry will participate in the first two group stage matches of the U-20 continental tournament, facing the Democratic Republic of Congo this Friday, May 2, and Senegal on Monday, May 5, 2025. The Ghanaian player will return to Lugo on May 7,” the club stated on its website before the start of the competition.

Afriyie’s absence will be a big blow to the team, considering his exploits and attacking instincts that could have helped them.

The striker assisted Emmanuel Mensah’s one goal for Ghana as they edged past Senegal in their second game to earn four points after two games, having drawn against DR Congo earlier.
