Former Ghana defender Sam Johnson has expressed disappointment over Ghana’s precarious position in the race for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification, highlighting the uncomfortable reality that the team now relies on Sudan’s misfortune to secure a spot in the tournament.

In a recent interview with Graphic Sports, Johnson lamented that Ghana, once considered a football powerhouse on the continent, is left hoping for other teams to falter.

“It’s sad we’re now praying for Sudan to lose their remaining games so we can qualify. God doesn’t work like that because the Sudanese also worship the same God,” he said, capturing the frustration of fans and players alike.

The former defender noted that Ghana’s position reflects deeper issues that need urgent attention.

Instead of hoping for a miracle, he suggested the national team should shift focus towards adequately preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

For Johnson, accepting the possible loss of AFCON qualification could be a step forward in strengthening the team’s chances in upcoming competitions.

“If we qualify for AFCON, it will be a miracle that has never happened before. Let’s focus on the World Cup and organize ourselves better. If we make it to AFCON, I’ll be surprised but happy,” he shared, underscoring the need for strategic planning and introspection as Ghana navigates this challenging moment.

As the Black Stars await their fate, the words of Sam Johnson echo a growing sentiment among supporters: a call for Ghana to rebuild and refocus, rather than relying on external outcomes to pave the way forward.
