Former Ghana defender Sam Johnson

Former Ghana defender Sam Johnson believes the Black Stars will need nothing short of a miracle to secure a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Ghana’s national team faces an uphill battle to qualify for next year’s tournament in Morocco after a challenging start to their campaign.

Under the leadership of Otto Addo, the Black Stars have managed only two points from four games, with two draws and two losses, while Sudan sits in the second qualifying position with seven points.

Commenting on the team’s prospects, Johnson expressed doubts about Ghana’s ability to qualify, suggesting that focusing on the 2026 World Cup might be a better strategy.

“If we qualify for AFCON, it will be a miracle that has never happened before,” Johnson told Graphic Sports.

“Let’s focus on the World Cup and organize ourselves better. If we make it to AFCON, I’ll be surprised but happy,” he added.

Ghana will conclude their qualification campaign next month with a match against already-qualified Angola in Luanda, followed by a home game at Accra Sports Stadium against Niger, who are currently bottom of the group.
