Former Majority Leader and outgoing Member of Parliament for Suame in the Ashanti Region, Honourable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has warned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) about the difficulties it may face in retaining power if the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) makes significant gains in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking on Kumasi’s Angel FM, the experienced politician stressed the strategic importance of the Ashanti Region to the NPP’s electoral prospects. While the region has long been considered the ruling party’s stronghold, Mensah Bonsu stated that the NDC has been stepping up its campaign attempts to capitalize on voter anger.

The NDC, led by flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, has increased its presence in the region, hoping to boost its share of the vote. Historically, the party has not dominated the region’s elections, but it consistently receives substantial support. Mahama has visited the region several times, hoping to woo undecided votes and appease dissatisfied NPP members.

Mensah Bonsu emphasized the potential impact of these activities, stating:

“If John Dramani Mahama can attain 30% of the total valid votes cast in the Ashanti Region, it will be impossible for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party to break the proverbial eight.”This statement emphasizes the Ashanti Region’s crucial role in the NPP’s efforts to keep power in the next general elections.

Despite his misgivings, Mensah Bonsu voiced confidence in the NPP’s capacity to maintain its regional control. He reassured supporters that the party is taking serious steps to maintain its historic base. “We will not give the NDC a chance in the Ashanti Region,” he declared, pledging that the NPP would keep its solid grip on the area.
