In the debut episode of Spotlight Spin with host Etornam Kumashie, renowned Ghanaian broadcaster and entrepreneur Nathan Kwabena Adisi, popularly known as Bola Ray, shared the fascinating story behind his name and reflected on his early years.

Bola Ray, a household name in Ghana’s media landscape, revealed that the nickname originated during his time at Accra Academy when he was just 11 years old. Initially, he was known by different variations, including “Nathie Ray” and “Nathie Bongo,” influenced by his senior schoolmates. However, his quest for a unique identity led him to adopt “Bola Ray” after a chance encounter with a pencil.

“I came across a pencil one day when I was going for prep in the evening, and I stumbled upon it on the floor. It had the word ‘Bola’ written on it,” he recalled. Inspired by the name, he combined it with “Ray,” which had already been part of his previous nicknames, and the now-iconic moniker was born.

Beyond just a nickname, Bola Ray infused meaning into each letter of the name, explaining that “B” stands for bold, “O” for outstanding, “L” for loving, and “A” for affable. “Ray,” he added, represents being religious, ambitious, and youthful—qualities he has carried throughout his career.

During the interview, he also reminisced about his childhood in Obuasi, where he was raised in a disciplined yet vibrant household. His father, a computer programmer at Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, and his mother, a fashion designer, provided a solid foundation for his future. He vividly recalled a defining moment in 1986 when his family relocated to Accra, marking his first journey outside Obuasi.

Bola Ray’s revelations offered a rare glimpse into the experiences that shaped his personality and career. From a young boy with a pencil-inspired nickname to a celebrated media personality, his story is one of self-definition and continuous evolution.
