Ireland and Lions star Tadhg Furlong faces the potential of a long ban after he was cited for allegedly grabbing the groin area of Munster’s Gavin Coombes.

Prop Furlong started his Leinster team’s 24-18 win over Irish derby rivals Munster at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on Saturday night.

In the first half, Coombes told referee Andrew Brace of the incident.

But the television match official could not find any video evidence to back up his claim.

Initially, Furlong was not mentioned with the allegation made against an unnamed Leinster player.

But on Monday, the 33-year-old was named in a statement by the United Rugby Championship (URC) which cited him for an act of foul play under the league’s rule which states ‘a player must not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship including but not limited to grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals.’

The URC said the disciplinary process arrangements will be made in due course.

Furlong, a three-time Lions tourist and one of Ireland’s most important players, would almost certainly miss his country’s home November Tests with Argentina, Fiji and South Africa and the finals weekend of the Nations Championship in London if found guilty.
