Iran war live: Tehran launches new wave of missiles towards Israel amid fears London under threat

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz ​said on Sunday that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had instructed the military to accelerate the demolition of Lebanese homes in ‘frontline villages’ to end threats to Israeli communities.

The military was instructed to immediately destroy all bridges over Lebanon’s Litani river which he said were used for ‘terrorist activity’, Katz said in a statement released by his office.

A nuclear-powered Royal Navy submarine has reportedly arrived in the Arabian sea.

HMS Anson, which is fitted with Tomahawk Block IV land-attack missiles with a range of 1,000 miles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes, left port in Perth on March 6 and is believed to be taking up position in the deep waters of the northern Arabian Sea.

The move brings Iran directly within range of British missiles, after it was reported that Iranian missiles could reach London.

Iranian missiles were fired towards the British/ US base on Diego Garcia, the largest of the Chagos Islands.

The islands currently remain British sovereign

territory, but their distance from Iran has sparked concerns about the possible range of its weapons.

An Iranian ballistic missile launched at Tel Aviv reportedly carried a cluster bomb warhead.

Seven people have been injured following the attacm from IRan.

Rescue forces and paramedics are responding to impacts in the city.

Steve Reed has refused to say how close Iran’s long-range missiles came to reaching Diego Garcia.

On Friday night, Iran fired two missiles towards the US/UK military base of Diego Garcia, sparking warnings about the range of Iranian weapons.

The island lies 2,360 miles from Iran, well beyond the 1,240 miles which was thought to be the outer limit of the regime’s reach.

IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said the range of the missiles posed a danger to the world, including European capitals.

However, the Housing Secretary appeared to suggest Israel’s warning that Iran has developed long-range missiles capable of reaching Europe is exaggerated.

He told BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme: ‘There is no specific assessment that the Iranians are targeting the UK or even could, if they wanted to.

‘We have the finest military in the world. We are perfectly capable of protecting this country.’

Mr Reed said the Israeli Defence Forces’ statement was ‘conditional’, adding ‘there is no assessment to substantiate what’s being said’.

Dimona is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) west of the nuclear research center and Arad around 35 kilometers (22 miles) north.

Since the beginning of the war, Iranian authorities have imposed an internet blackout on its citizens.

According to monitoring group NetBlocks, Iranians are now entering their 23rd day without internet access.

“The measure adds to the wartime distress of millions of civilians who lack independent sources of information and alerts,” it added.

We have never seen anything quite like this before.

There have been wars in the Persian Gulf – at least two of them in living memory. There have been oil price shocks – most famously in the 1970s and 1980s. There have been cost of living crises triggered by war – as we all know, having faced the aftershocks of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

But this latest war is holding a knife against the very throat of the economy.

Abu Obeida, a Hamas military spokesperson, said the group was ‘watching with pride’ as missiles struck the Israeli cities of Dimona and Arad.

He described the attacks as ‘a natural response to the Zionist-American aggression against Iran and the genocidal massacres in Gaza,’ directly linking the escalation to ongoing events in the Palestinian enclave.

An Iranian official has said the Strait of Hormuz is open to ‘everyone except enemies’ in a new statement.

Seyed Ali Mousavi, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization, made the remarks carried by two Iranian news agencies.

The statement indicates that Tehran would determine which vessels are allowed passage. Iran has already approved the passage of ships through the waterway to China and elsewhere in Asia.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the rest of the globe’s oceans, is a critical pathway for the world’s flow of oil.

Attacks on commercial ships and threats of further strikes have stopped nearly all tankers from carrying oil, gas and other goods through the passage.

Six people have been killed in a helicopter crash in Qatar’s waters.

A man has been killed in a suspected anti-tank missile attack in the northern border town of Misgav Am.

The Israeli ambulance service said two vehicles caught fire.

Misgav Am sits near Israel’s northern border with Lebanon.

Sirens were sounded in the community an hour after the attack.

Hezbollah later took responsibility. In a statement, the group claims to have targeted a ‘gathering of Israeli enemy army soldiers in the settlement of Misgav Am with a rocket barrage’ at 8 a.m.

The IDF says it detected fire from Lebanon at that time, which struck two vehicles, killing a man.
