Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has rejected claims that supporters of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia are intimidating delegates ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, describing the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on January 22, 2026, Oppong Nkrumah said Ghana’s democratic culture makes intimidation in party elections unrealistic, stressing that delegates cannot be coerced into voting against their will.

“I find these claims amusing. Who can intimidate someone today because of an internal election? What will you do to the person?” he questioned.

He argued that allegations of intimidation often emerge when aspirants begin to lose support, adding that such claims are usually used to explain anticipated defeat.

“When people sense they are losing, they raise these issues to create excuses. There is no intimidation anywhere,” he said.

Oppong Nkrumah cited his constituency to illustrate his point, noting that delegates would vote according to their convictions, not pressure.

“In my constituency, some people will vote for Bawumia and others will vote for different candidates. That is democracy, and nobody can intimidate anyone,” he stated.

He warned that internal attacks and careless statements could damage the party’s image and benefit the opposition, referencing how comments made by party members were used against the NPP in the 2024 general elections.

“When people dislike a candidate, they make reckless comments and the opposition later uses those statements against us,” he said.

Oppong Nkrumah urged all aspirants and their supporters to avoid trading accusations and instead focus on engaging delegates with their ideas and visions for the party.

“Our focus should be on campaigning and selling our ideas so delegates can make informed choices. That is what will strengthen the party,” he indicated.
