Ofori-Atta’s Family Denounces INTERPOL Red Notice, Calls It Political Targeting

The family of ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has publicly defended him after Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) secured an INTERPOL Red Notice for his arrest. In a forceful statement on Monday, they rejected the action as unfair and driven by political motives.

The family clarified that Ofori-Atta is not fleeing justice but is undergoing cancer treatment at the Mayo Clinic in the U.S., with surgery set for June 13. “Ken is not a fugitive—he is fighting for his life,” they emphasized.

While the OSP has kept its investigation details private, it accused Ofori-Atta of non-cooperation, a claim his relatives dispute as false and damaging. They have formally requested INTERPOL to withdraw the Red Notice, alleging the OSP’s submission contained distorted facts. “This is prosecutorial overreach and a smear campaign under the guise of justice,” the statement asserted.

Family Alleges OSP Suppressed Medical Evidence, Questions Legal Basis for Red Notice

The family further accused the OSP of intentionally omitting medical records confirming Ofori-Atta’s travel restrictions. They revealed that the former minister, recognizing his precarious health, had offered to cooperate with investigators remotely—a proposal they claim was disregarded.

Emphasizing the lack of formal charges, the family criticized the OSP’s approach: “The narrative of him evading justice originated from a press briefing, not a judicial ruling. This not only violates fair trial principles but also erodes public trust in our legal institutions,” their statement asserted.
