The Headmistress of Chemu Senior High School, Vicentia Annin-Agyei, has raised concerns over the critical shortage of boarding facilities, warning that the lack of accommodation is pushing some students into insecure living arrangements, myjoyonline.com has reported.

She highlighted the growing crisis, explaining that many students are forced to rent rooms near the school due to the lack of boarding options.

“Coming and commuting from home, some of our students are forced to look for homes nearby and rent, just to be able to attend school. This also poses another challenge,” she said.

Annin-Agyei further revealed that, in some cases, students are left with no choice but to live with boyfriends or girlfriends, a situation that exposes them to additional risks.

“Some of them are even living with their boyfriends and girlfriends. We have that challenge,” she said.

She emphasised that such arrangements are often a matter of necessity rather than choice.

“Some are forced into that situation, not because they intended to be in it, but because circumstances have compelled them,” she stated.

The Headmistress also underscored the school’s persistent challenges stemming from inadequate infrastructure.

“As a transitional school, when we say transitional, it means that the whole year group is not in school at the same time. There is always one year group out and two year groups in. It is transitional because the facilities we have are not enough to cater for all our students,” she clarified.

She called for urgent action to improve the facilities, emphasizing that doing so would significantly ease the difficulties students currently face.

“We would urge that these issues be addressed first, so that at least we can curb some of these challenges,” she urged.
