Former Hearts of Oak striker Prince Tagoe has revealed the unforgettable emotions he felt after winning the maiden edition of the CAF Confederations Cup.

In his debut season with Hearts of Oak, Tagoe scored 18 league goals, won the CAF Confederations Cup, and clinched the Ghana Premier League title, a feat yet to be matched by any Ghana Premier League player.

Although Tagoe won two trophies and claimed the league’s top scorer award, it was the CAF Confederations Cup that left the most lasting impression. Fans of Hearts of Oak flooded the streets of Kumasi, chanting and celebrating late into the night.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Tagoe described the joy of that moment as beyond words.

“It was a joy that I can’t express. When we won the cup, we left Kumasi at 10 a.m. and didn’t get to Accra until 2 a.m. because fans had blocked all the roads celebrating,” he recalled.

On January 9, 2004, Hearts of Oak defeated rivals Asante Kotoko in Kumasi to claim the first-ever CAF Confederations Cup. The game, which ended 1-1, was decided by a dramatic penalty shootout that Hearts of Oak won 9-8.

The rivalry between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko is one of Ghana’s most storied, adding immense significance to this victory.

For Tagoe, defeating their archrivals made the triumph even better and historically significant.

“Hearts and Kotoko have always been rivals, and making sure we brought the cup back from Kumasi was a massive achievement, It was the first time, and I believe it will remain in the history books for a long time. Those are some of the most joyful moments I’ve had with Hearts,” he added.

Tagoe’s electric form in 2004 propelled him to opportunities in Europe, where he played for clubs in Germany, Serbia, and Turkey. Now retired at 37, he boasts an impressive 36 appearances for the Black Stars.
