Ghana international Inaki Williams was on target on Wednesday night for Athletic Club against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, but his goal was disallowed.

The forward started for his team in the game at King Abdullah Sports City, putting in a strong performance despite the eventual defeat.

Barcelona opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Alejandro Balde set up Gavi, who finished expertly into the bottom left corner to give the Catalan side a 1-0 lead.

Inaki Williams nearly equalised on the stroke of halftime with a low shot inside the box, but Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech produced a superb save to deny him.

Early in the second half, Barcelona extended their lead. Gavi played a neat pass to teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who calmly finished into the right corner to make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute.

Athletic Club thought they had clawed back into the game in the 87th minute when Williams capitalised on a defensive mistake to score. However, celebrations were cut short after a VAR review revealed an offside in the build-up, ruling the goal out.

Barcelona’s win secured their place in the Spanish Super Cup final, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final between Real Madrid and Mallorca.

For Athletic Club, the defeat was a tough blow despite a valiant effort led by Inaki Williams.
