Ghanaian singer Wendy Asiamah Addo, popularly known as Wendy Shay, has shared her thoughts on how women are often perceived in society, especially when it comes to leadership roles.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne on October 29, 2025, Wendy Shay noted that in many parts of the world, including Ghana, women are still not viewed as capable leaders.

“I think in this part of the world, women have always been seen to play a particular role. Women are not really considered to be leaders. Your place is in the kitchen while the man has to go out and work,” she said.

The ‘Too Late’ hitmaker, however, believes that the perception is gradually changing as more women continue to break barriers and take up leadership positions.

The story behind the ‘PTSD’ song – Wendy Shay explains

“Gradually, the narrative is changing. I feel like as a woman, you have to keep on proving yourself that you can really be a leader and you’re emotionally and mentally there to be able to take responsibility and also be accountable,” she stated.

She admitted that the process of changing societal perceptions about women can be tough, as it often demands emotional strength and resilience.

“I feel like changing of narrative is what’s so demanding and stressful because you really pull through and face the storm no matter what.

“Our bodies are designed so differently than men. Naturally, we are quite weak. It’s easy for a woman to break down emotionally than a man when it comes to some things,” she added.

Wendy Shay also stated that for women to succeed in leadership, they must develop mental strength and determination.

“You have to build yourself up and know that you’re really up for it mentally.”
