Following the untimely death of 31-year-old trotro conductor Kwesi Nyarko, police in Kumasi have opened an inquiry, according to a post shared today by Metro TV Ghana.

In the central business district (CBD) of Kumasi, Kwesi was fatally stabbed following a dispute that was apparently caused by rivalry for a female traveler.

According to witnesses, the argument began when Kwesi and another trotro conductor, who were employed by separate businesses on the Kumasi-Tafo route, argued about passenger-pickup space.

One witness recalled, “They were shouting back and forth, arguing loudly.” “Then, suddenly, it got physical.”

One of the conductors is accused of stealing a knife from a local street vendor after a heated debate and unexpectedly stabbing Kwesi in the neck with it.

Following the incident, the assailant—who was believed to be a worker for a competing transport company—left Kwesi critically hurt on the ground and went away.

According to police accounts, the attacker may have been pursuing Kwesi for a while prior to starting the altercation.

An officer said, “It appears that there was animosity between them for a while.”

The assailant dropped the knife after the stabbing and disappeared into the congested streets. The knife was found at the scene by police, who have taken it as evidence.

After that, Kwesi’s body was taken to the nearby mortuary, where an autopsy is planned.

Law enforcement is actively searching for the suspect, but no arrests have been made as of yet.

One police official said, “We are following every lead to bring justice to the family of the deceased.”

It’s a tough job. “Every day you have to fight for passengers,” said another trotro employee. “However, it’s unfortunate that it had to end this way.”

Authorities and transportation providers alike must take prompt action to address the hazards that conductors and drivers encounter on a daily basis.

“We need to create a safer environment for all workers and passengers,” the police official continued. “Incidents like this should not happen.”
