Former Hearts of Oak captain Amankwah Mireku has criticized Ghana’s two most successful clubs, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, for their underwhelming performances in the league.

The glory days of Ghanaian football seem like a distant memory, particularly for these two giants of the local game. In recent years, both Kotoko and Hearts have suffered a significant decline, failing to live up to their storied histories.

Once the dominant forces in Ghanaian football, they have struggled with consistency and competitiveness, leading to growing frustration among their fans.

Mireku, speaking in an interview with Onua Sports, expressed his frustration over their decline, emphasizing how their struggles have negatively impacted the attractiveness of the Ghana Premier League.

“When you go to Spain, you’ll always see Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top—that’s the tradition. In every country, you need two dominant teams whose performances remain consistently competitive, as that makes the league more attractive,” he said.

“If Kotoko and Hearts underperform, there’s no way the other clubs will maintain their competitiveness,” he added.

He also urged the players to step up and restore the clubs to their former glory.

“The players need to work hard to raise the standards of the league because, right now, the level has dropped,” he concluded.
