Ghanaian media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has sparked widespread discussion on social media after sharing candid remarks about his life in the United States and his desire to return to Ghana.

Speaking on his show For The Records on Monday, March 4, the outspoken broadcaster disclosed that he relocated to the U.S. primarily to further his education rather than to pursue better economic opportunities.

During the programme, Afrifa-Mensah admitted that he is growing weary of life abroad and hopes to return to Ghana once his studies are completed.

“I want to come back, I am tired. Those eager to relocate here will not understand what we are saying unless they also come,” he said.

He emphasised that his move to the United States was purely academic, explaining that the harsh weather conditions and lifestyle adjustments have been difficult for him.

“Mine is not about money but rather the decision to further my studies. This is what has brought me to live in this cold weather,” he added.

The media personality also described life in the U.S. as isolating compared to the social environment in Ghana.

According to him, his daily routine revolves mainly around attending classes and returning to his residence, with little opportunity for social interaction.

“This country, you don’t have people to talk with, you barely meet people, it is an isolated society. From school, you return to your room, coupled with the snow and its attendant cold weather,” he explained.

Afrifa-Mensah further argued that if African countries, particularly Ghana, were well developed, many citizens would not feel compelled to relocate abroad in search of better opportunities.

He pointed to issues such as corruption, inadequate healthcare systems, and challenges within the education sector as key factors pushing many Africans to seek opportunities overseas.

“If we are seriously developing our nation by providing better healthcare, good schools, and shunning corruption, this is not an ideal place for us to be,” he said.
