A Pirates fan held this placard during a match

Football rivalry has a way of producing cheeky moments, and one of them came in South Africa this week.

During Orlando Pirates’ midweek clash with Stellenbosch in the South African Premier League on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a supporter of the Buccaneers caught attention with a witty placard that read: “I’m going to Asante Kotoko you today.”

The sign was an obvious jab at Kaizer Chiefs, who had suffered a painful 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko in the Toyota Cup final back in July 2025.

Pirates fans have wasted no time rubbing salt into their rivals’ wounds, and this display was a fresh reminder of that humiliation.

Pirates backed up the banter on the pitch, too. Sebelebe Kamogelo scored the only goal of the game, sealing a 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch. The result was significant, marking the Buccaneers’ first win of the new Premiership campaign after a slow start to the season.

Ironically, while Pirates celebrated in South Africa, Kotoko themselves were enduring a setback of their own.

The Porcupine Warriors fell 2-1 to Bibiani Gold Stars in their opening fixture of the 2025 GHALCA Top Four at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Kotoko had taken an early lead through Albert Amoah, but a penalty from Samuel Atta Kumi and a Henry Ansu own goal turned the game on its head.
