MP for Effutu constituency and ranking member of the Appointments Committee, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has openly addressed his struggle with the Ewe language.

Afenyo-Markin, who has often been the subject of confusion regarding his ethnic background, whether he is Fante or Ewe, has clarified that he is, in fact, an Anlo man.

During the vetting session of the Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Dzifa Gomashie, Afenyo-Markin found himself in a seemingly awkward situation when he tried to correctly pronounce an Anlo name.

The name “Avoeme,” a suburb in Aflao, left Afenyo-Markin speechless for a moment.

He then turned to Dzifa Gomashie for help with the correct pronunciation.

When some members of the Appointments Committee inquired why a typical Anlo man like him couldn’t pronounce it, Afenyo-Markin admitted that he struggles with his native language.

“I’m an Anlo man, but I’ve been living in Effutu, Winneba for many years. So, I admit that I have this weakness. I can’t speak the language properly. That’s a fact, and I won’t deny it,” he stated.

Turning to Dzifa Gomashie, he asked, “Please, I don’t want to risk the pronunciation. Can you help me?”

Dzifa Gomashie immediately stepped in and pronounced the name correctly with a typical Anlo accent.

Sources say that Afenyo-Markin originally hails from Akatsi South but has spent most of his life in Winneba.
