Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has surprised boxing legend Azumah Nelson with a brand-new car in a heartwarming gesture of appreciation.
The surprise took place during a visit to Ibrahim Mahama’s office by Sharaf Mahama, son of President John Dramani Mahama and CEO of Legacy Rise Sports, and British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua, who was the special guest at the Battle of the Beasts boxing event organised by Legacy Rise Sports at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Friday, June 13, 2025.
Earlier that day, the team had paid a courtesy visit to President John Mahama at the Jubilee House before proceeding to Ibrahim Mahama’s office to thank him for his support during the event.
According to Ibrahim Mahama, the gesture was meant to honour and celebrate the legacy of Azumah Nelson, who is widely regarded as Africa’s greatest boxer.
Those present were visibly moved when Ibrahim Mahama handed over the keys to a brand-new Toyota Fortuner and an undisclosed amount of money, recognising the champion not only for his achievements in the ring but also for his continued contributions to Ghanaian sports and youth development.
Azumah Nelson, visibly touched, expressed deep gratitude, saying the gesture reminded him that true greatness is remembered and celebrated.
“I am grateful to you, Ibrahim Mahama, and to Sharaf Mahama for this big surprise. I didn’t expect this at all. I am just supporting my son Sharaf, who has shown great interest in promoting the sport I love,” Azumah said.
Present at the ceremony were members of Anthony Joshua’s team, close friends of Ibrahim Mahama, Yaw Sakyi Afari (Head of RITE Sports Services and Manager of Azumah Nelson), businessman Henry Quarshie (a member of Azumah’s team), and several members of the Legacy Rise Sports team.
Ibrahim Mahama is a Ghanaian businessman and founder of Engineers and Planners as well as Dzata Cement Limited.
