‘I wish I could speak all Ghanaian languages’ – Wiyaala

Ghanaian singer-songwriter, Wiyaala, has expressed desire to speak all the local languages in Ghana.

In an interview on TV3, shared on X on December 10, 2025, Wiyaala stated that many Ghanaians have abandoned their mother tongues in favour of foreign languages, something she finds concerning.

She explained that her passion for learning Ghanaian languages motivates her to sing in various local dialects.

“I should be able to learn, at least if I can sing fluently. So I sang the three versions of the song, which sounded more fluent, and I decided to put it out there. It was just a jam. I sang it, and the Yaga Yagas loved it.

“It’s a Ghanaian song, and even as a Ghanaian, I wish I could speak all the languages in the country. We are learning other languages, but we are not learning the ones within our own country. That’s why it’s not good. So we should learn,” she said.

Wiyaala also noted that because of her keen interest in local dialects, she has made an effort to learn all the major ones spoken across Ghana.

According to her, Ghanaians must create space and opportunities for young artistes to freely express themselves in their native languages.

“I have tried to speak all the local languages. I can say ‘hello’ or ‘hi’ in all of them. I know Woezor, Obaakɛ, Twi, and others. I speak a little Hausa because in the North, Hausa isn’t one of the common languages. Many people even thought I was a Hausa girl when I started.

“Every region has its own language, and I think it’s time we provide space for young artistes who are more comfortable singing in their native languages. We should push and encourage them, because through music, we also get to learn other languages,” she added.
