Rev. James Aquaah, an 86-year-old who recently graduated from Central University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology, has shared one of the most challenging moments he faced while pursuing his education at an advanced age.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime on November 24, 2025, he recounted how he was once removed from an examination hall because his school fees had not yet been paid.

According to him, he relied on his child in the United Kingdom to cover his fees. However, during his second year, the funds were delayed.

“When I returned to school and started the course in university, my child in the UK used to send me money for my school fees. He delayed in making payment when I was in level 200,” he said.

He explained that he had already started writing an exam when a staff member from the accounts department walked into the room to question him about his fees.

“Because he delayed, when I went to the exam hall to write the paper, someone from the accounts department of the university came asking me if I’ve paid my school fees. I told him that my child will send it soon so he should be patient,” he noted.

Rev Aquaah said he had completed three out of the four questions when the staff member abruptly seized his answer booklet in front of the entire class.

“The paper had four questions, I had answered the 3 and I was on the fourth question when he seized my paper in the presence of other students because I hadn’t paid for my fees. I was very hurt,” he disclosed.

He added that the delayed fees were later paid in full, including a penalty for late payment. After the settlement, the university allowed him to sit for all the missed examinations.

“The money was later sent and all fees were cleared and they made me pay a penalty fee for paying the school fees late. After payments were made, they opened the room for me to write all the exams. That’s the only challenge I had in the university,” he added.
