German-born Ghanaian midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has opened up on his long road to recovery and his ambition to return to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 30-year-old recently made his return to action after nearly three years out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury and has already hit the grounds running.

He has already shown promising signs, contributing a goal and an assist in recent games he played for Freiburg II against Eintracht Trier and Hessen Kassel.

Reflecting on his difficult journey, Kyereh admitted that the long spell on the sidelines pushed him to the brink.

“I was fighting against thoughts of retirement but the truth is, those thoughts came, especially in these difficult times of setback,” he told JoySports.

Despite those struggles, the midfielder remains determined to fight his way back into top shape and compete for a place at the global tournament.

“Yes, I do. That is another dream and goal I am striving for, and I believe in it. I need to be honest with myself, but I still have a few weeks or months to work on getting into the best shape possible,” he added.

Kyereh, is not just aiming for selection but also to make a meaningful impact if given the chance.

“My aim is to play one or two full matches before the World Cup begins. I believe I can get fit in time. I don’t want to go to the World Cup just to be a part of it… if I cannot truly help the team or have the same impact I had before,” he concluded

While many Ghanaian fans have called for his inclusion, Kyereh acknowledges that the final decision lies beyond his control.

“At the end of the day, I am not the one who decides. I can only do what is within my power and leave the rest to the decision-makers,” he concluded, as he continues his steady comeback with hopes of wearing the national colours once again.

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh was included in the Black Stars squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup that was held in Qatar.
