Former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku has endorsed the government’s decision to remove the betting tax, citing its ineffectiveness.

Awuku disclosed that he advised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government against implementing the betting tax, deeming it counterproductive.

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North stated that he fully supports President John Dramani Mahama‘s move to scrap the betting tax, noting that similar measures have failed in other countries.

“I’m excited that the betting tax will be scrapped. I’ve consistently opposed it, even during the NPP era, as it hasn’t worked in many jurisdictions,” Awuku said in an interview with Daily Guide Network (DGN).

Awuku highlighted how the tax affected lottery operations, emboldening illegal operators as people sought to evade the tax.

“Lottery was part of the betting tax. The government-owned National Lottery Authority must contribute to the national kitty.

“However, taxing oneself is counterproductive, as it empowers underground operators. When playing with the government, a 10% tax is applied, but illegal operators offer full payouts,” Awuku explained.

Awuku’s comments follow Minister-designate for Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s promise to abolish the betting tax, citing its inability to prevent youth involvement in betting.

Ato Forson clarified that removing the betting tax would not significantly impact Ghana’s economy, considering the revenue it generates.
